Zim Cricket, are we good enough?

Zimbabwe cricket has been a rollercoaster of emotions since the glory days. One day it’s full of potential the next it’s just not good enough. Do we have what it takes?

Zimbabwe is one of those right, there is always something way bigger than the picture at hand. How does Zim Cricket regain dignity. We failed to participate in the T20 Cup in 2021 and that for me was just a new all time low. No disrespect intended but the likes of Oman , Netherlands and Papua New Guinea made it to the showpiece one way or the other. We could blame management of the team all we want but surely that alone simply cannot account for some of the most dismal performances we’ve seen such as that crushing test loss to Afghanistan back in March of 2021 , it’s simply unforgivable. How on earth do you win the first match with 10 wickets then then lose the next in that kind of fashion. I think it’s up to the players sometimes, and particularly in our case. Are our bowlers working to match international standards in both quality and consistency? Are our batters looking to capitalise on good pitches and be patient on the difficult ones? We may never know.

The bowling in Zimbabwe is almost what we could define as plain, there isn’t much identity in the bowling attack. You go to South Africa and be sure to get some pure chin-music. With the likes of Rabada and Ngidi, you know what you are going to be facing, go to India and the spinners will eat you alive , New Zealand has the fast seamers, Australia’s big quicks provide quality fast bowling and in England the swing and movement is how they know they’ll always compete. What is Bangladesh worried about when they come to Harare sports Club , are the spinners going to be a problem, are the seamers going to give you a headache or maybe the batters are going to score big. Don’t get wrong, the talent is there. The trajectory is good, but is it good enough. Our best batsmen are only 2 (or 3 at best) years away from retirement. What are we doing to ensure our youngsters can take the reigns. The youngsters are talented but they don’t play enough international cricket therefore they barely have any identity at all. At the highest level there is a ball with your name on it, can the boys manage to spot the ball? I would like to hear what you think about our batsmen in the comments. I like the guys that are bowling currently, Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava are the future and a good one at that. The big question in our bowling attack is are some of the oldies the answer to that third seamer position? They don’t seem to be using any kind of experience to help the team and that’s another big issue. If the older guys be it seamers or batters can’t score or take wickets, it becomes a problem in the fielding, which we’ll point out. The senior batters are performing, Williams, Ervine, Raza and Chakabva are basically lifting the batting department and that’ll obviously rub onto the the younger batters. Do we have that in the bowling department? I don’t think so. The fielding is the last department, and very much also a problem. The team leaks at least 40 runs in the field in almost every ODI take that away in the first Sri Lanka ODI and we are 1-0 up , but then again that’s just me.

What do you think needs to improve in Zimbabwe Cricket National Team. Put it in the comments.
